Just read this in the Times today: Apparently 12,000 chickens were gassed recently in a practice run for what might happen in the event of a bird flu outbreak. None of these birds actually had bird flu. The birds were killed using CO2 that is supposedly a humane exercise. Personally I have to take a dim view of this pointless exercise that has taken place. Gassing obviously works, that’s a fact. Birds are not indestructable, that’s a fact. If bird flu ever did hit this island, I’m sure that affected birds could be dealt with accordingly without this over-dramatisation resulting in a large-scale culling of several thousand chickens.
