No Nonsense?

Earlier this week I was very happy to hear that Ryanair were teaming up with FBD insurance to offer “low-cost” car insurance to the Irish market. Both on the media press releases and on the website Ryanair proudly say:

Straight-forward, low cost car insurance
Welcome to Ireland’s new low cost, value for money car insurance. Right now, on this website, you can avail of cheaper car insurance and get on the road for less!
At No Nonsense we ensure you have all the necessary legal cover to get you on the road and at the lowest cost possible. Then you can choose from a list of optional add-ons and at the same time see exactly how much your premium changes.
No Nonsense puts you in the driver’s seat and in complete control of your car insurance costs!!

Right so, let’s check it out. I’m a male, 29 years old, full drivers licence, no points, 5+ years no claims, no accidents, claims, convictions, etc, all the good stuff. Don’t drive a mad modified car just an ordinary off-the-shelf motor that many, many more people in Ireland drive. No problems, no nonsense right? Not a chance! As usual online systems just can’t handle anything other than a 1.2 Micra with a mid-30s driver.

Dear Ryanair/FBD, this experience with your site was indeed nonsense; was indeed fuss and hassle and cost me precious moments of wasted time. Had I wanted to call your helpline for a quote I would not have went online to do so. Don’t advertise something that you’re not prepared to deliver on. By the way don’t feel singled out by this, most other insurance websites fall into the same category but for some misguided reason I really thought that your offering would be different.

  1. Johnathan,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your blog comment. As you can imagine No Nonsense car insurance has received a lot of coverage on the blog sites since launch.. thankfully most of it positive, but it has taken us a while to read through it all. As you pointed out on your blog, insurance websites can not offer instant quotations in all instances. Can I ask you a couple of questions to try and help us establish why you were not offered a quotation in this instance? Firstly did you request a call back? Secondly do you mind me asking what type of car you drive?

  3. Therese,

Firstly I tried to respond to you by e-mail but my response failed as your e-mail server said that the address you provided was invalid. Please send me your address again if you would like to hear from me.

I would like to formally acknowledge and commend your follow-up to this post. It is enlightening and inspiring that finally, insurance companies are taking public opinions seriously. In the many years that I have been engaging with insurers this is definitely the first positive outreach that I have received to ask me for my opinions without having to take formal action under equal status or otherwise. I was disgruntled that your new site didn’t rise above the other current offerings in so far as being able to quote for vehicles that I already have insured for many years but hopefully your progressive attitude to gathering feedback will see a new dawn for the Irish insurance market – a wake-up that is sorely needed for the entire spectrum of insurance.

    Kind Regards,

    Jonathan

  5. Hi Therese,

I don’t know what’s happening here but I tried to mail you again and it bounced again from the mail server. Here is a screenshot of the twice failed FBD Postmaster reply from your email server, click here. Perhaps try sending me an e-mail to jbrazil@jbwan.com and I’ll see if I can respond from there.

    Kind Regards,

  6. I applied for this insurance product, and got a very resonable quote. So i paid my money. next thing (2 weeks later) I get a letter saying I had not returned the proposal form and it was a crime to drive without a valid insurance disc. So i called them and told them I had not recieved a proposal form. They told me it would be fine and they wouyld send me one. 12 days later it arrived. I sent it and called the next week as I had recieved another warning letter. They told me it had been recieved along with my noclaims form. 2 weeks later no “disc” so I called and they said sorry , they actually did not recieve the forms and they would have to send a new proposal form. so I am now driving for nearly a monthe without a valid insurance disc.

  8. If this is the case Pablo then you need to be careful. The onus is on you not your insurance company, to display a valid insurance disc. If you are stopped by the Gardaí then no excuses are allowed. Have you even received a receipt for the premium that you paid? If so then you need to make this matter far more formal than just calling the company involved.

  9. Pablo thank you for your comments. This information is invaluable to us as we are at such an early stage of development, and any glitches in our processes and admin procedures need to be recorded and corrected as soon as possible. I have informed our processes department of what has happened and they are currently trying to get the the bottom of the problem to ensure disc is posted and that this problem does not occur again. If you still have not received your disc Pablo please email me at therese@nononsense.ie (which I have now tested and am assured is working) and I will personally see to it that it is posted to you immediately.
