Now here’s a quirky idea that you don’t hear about every day. Somebody has gone off and done the math of exactly how much energy would be saved if Google’s homepage had a black background instead of white. Makes sense I guess. source: the thinking blog

  1. Fascinating. When I read it I wondered, probably naively, whether LCD and CRT makers should rather make the default backing colour white (or Windows grey) instead of black. I’m not sure how screens work so maybe any other colour would require some energy to illuminate, but if they don’t imagine the power savings!

  2. Except for TFTs of course 🙂

    I imagine there are still millions of CRTs in use, but how many new computers (from PC World, Dell and the like) come with them?
