Overheard on the radio this morning and read in the paper: It looks like Waterford Crystal are to shut up shop in Dungarvan after 30 years of working in the town. Further bad news for the company and moreso for the many workers. Waterford Crystal has been a main stay of the county for decades but in recent times it has faced tough-going. Some say that 9/11 had its toll on the demand for crystal others would say that the company had been looking to cut costs from as early as 1990 and has been moving out into Europe (particularly Austria) in search of cheaper labour and materials costs since long before that tragic day also. If the factory goes then so should the name, it should no longer be allowed to trade on what the directors left behind. source: Irish Times
