Sony have done the technological equivalent of sticking a cd onto the back of a DVD, well done lads. This engineering achievement is set to address the issue of backwards comaptibility of DVDs. OK, but surely this only serves audio and wouldn’t Sony’s money have been better spent upgrading existing Hi-Fi, etc with existing technology (i.e. DVD drives) so that all new systems would read DVD rather than introducing yet another DVD format into the market? Backwards compatibility is a worthy concern but I don’t recall ever being able to insert a 78″ into a CD drive when they appeared… source: The Register
